Mami Terai
Mami Terai is the founder of the Law Office of Mami Terai, P.C. located in the Midtown part of Manhattan, New York. Her accomplishments at the law office include advising domestic and international businesses on forming corporate structures, shareholders/operation agreements, state registrations, tax, and immigration options, registering client company at foreign jurisdictions, reactivating tax-exempt status for a not-for-profit corporation, and advising a multi-national corporation on bond exchange in 150 million dollar deal, to name a few.
Having graduated from New York University School of Law with Master of Laws (LL.M) in Trade Regulation with the honor of being Graduate Editor for Journal of International Law and Politics in 2001, Ms. Terai was invited to work for The Law Firm of McGovern & Associates in New York, New York, where she offered various services including drafting confidential agreements on trade secrets, and applying for visas for foreign media representatives, specialty occupation workers, artists and family based immigrants.
After receiving Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard Law School in 1996 and Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government in 1997, Ms. Terai returned to Japan for her tenure at the Prime Minister’s Office as the International Specialist of the Science Council of Japan where she promoted the Japanese scientific community’s presence worldwide by organizing two large international conferences, both of which were approved by the Japanese Cabinet with nationwide support. She also worked to secure key positions for Japanese nationals in international organizations such as UNESCO’s Secretary General.
As a graduate of the top universities in Japan, The University of Tokyo (1988, B.A. in Economics) and Waseda University (1986, LL.B.), Ms. Terai worked as a project manager for a Japanese top-tier real estate company overseeing the entire process of Tokyo’s largest urban re-development project. The task ranged from conducting environmental assessment to public hearings, applying for special governmental assistance as a model project, negotiating land sales with the government, negotiating brokerage contracts, and coordinating the marketing of the completed units.
Ms. Terai’s thesis at Harvard on the business implications of the recent enactment of the Japanese Administrative Procedure Law has been adopted as required reading in two classes at Harvard Law School. Ms. Terai regulary writes articles to the newspaper "Shukan NY Seikatsu"that is distributed in nationwide and in Japan as well as other newspapers in New York metropolitan area. Ms. Terai has been admitted to the New York State Bar and is fluent in English and a native speaker of Japanese.
